Ring Sizing Guide: How to Find Your Ring Size

A ring that fits doesn't ask for your attention. It doesn't spin when you talk with your hands or catch on your knuckle when you take it off at night. It just stays.

That's the part of a ring nobody photographs, and it matters. Especially before a proposal, or a gift meant to be worn every day for the rest of someone's life. The design gets noticed. The fit is what lets it be worn.

Here's how sizing works at AFANDI, what to know before you come in, and what happens if a ring ever needs adjusting.

Get Sized in Store

The most accurate way to find your size is with a ring sizer: a set of graduated rings, each marked with a size, that you try on one at a time until one feels right. AFANDI keeps a sizer at both our Terrell and Forney locations, and sizing happens during an in-store consultation.

Why in person? Because a size isn't only a number. It's how the ring passes over your knuckle, how it sits at the base of your finger, and how it feels in the band width you're actually choosing. We can check all three in a few minutes. A chart can't.

Ring Size Chart

For reference, here's how US ring sizes translate to inner diameter (the distance straight across the inside of the ring) and circumference (the distance around it), in millimeters.

The size we find on the sizer in store is the one we go by:

US Size Inner Diameter (mm) Circumference (mm)
3 14.1 44.2
3.5 14.5 45.5
4 14.9 46.8
4.5 15.3 48.0
5 15.7 49.3
5.5 16.1 50.6
6 16.5 51.9
6.5 16.9 53.1
7 17.3 54.4
7.5 17.7 55.7
8 18.1 57.0
8.5 18.6 58.3
9 18.9 59.5
9.5 19.4 60.8
10 19.8 62.1
10.5 20.2 63.4
11 20.6 64.6
11.5 21.0 65.9
12 21.4 67.2
12.5 21.8 68.5
13 22.2 69.7

Before Your Appointment

  • Come in later in the day if you can.

Fingers are a little fuller in the evening than first thing in the morning.

  • Give your hands a minute to warm up.

Cold shrinks fingers. Heat and humidity swell them. Room temperature gives the truest read.

  • Wider bands fit snugger.

A wide band covers more of your finger, so it can feel tighter than a thin band in the same size. Tell us the width you're considering and we'll size for that ring, not a generic one.

  • Mind the knuckle.

If your knuckle is wider than the base of your finger, the ring should slide over it with a little resistance, then sit comfortably without spinning. That balance is easiest to feel in person.

  • Know which finger.

Your two hands can measure differently, so we'll size the finger the ring is going on.

Sizing for a Surprise Proposal

Keeping it a secret makes sizing harder. Not impossible.

  • Borrow a ring.

If your partner wears a ring on their ring finger, slip it away for an afternoon and bring it to us. We'll measure it on the sizer. A ring from another finger still helps. Just tell us which finger it came from.

  • Ask someone close.

A best friend, sibling, or parent may already know, or can find out without raising questions.

  • If you're unsure, size up.

A ring that's a little big still goes on for the moment you ask. One that's too small doesn't.

After the yes, come in together and we'll size it properly.

If It Doesn't Fit

It happens. Fingers change with seasons, with years, with life.

Most rings can be resized, which means a jeweler adds or removes a small amount of metal from the shank (the band of the ring) to reach the new size. Some designs take more care. Rings with stones set along the band, engravings, or intricate detail can be harder to resize. Rings made from alternative metals, like tungsten, usually can't be resized at all and are remade in the new size instead. If you're choosing one of these, it's worth getting the size right the first time.

Our Resizing Policy walks through what's covered, including one complimentary resize within the first year for rings under our general policy. And once it fits, our Ring Care Guide covers how to keep it looking the way it did the day you got it.
